City Gate Shoppes and Residences is an example of high rise mixed development. It is located strategically in the Central Region along the Beach Road / Nicoll Highway Corridor, at the fringe of the Downtown Core cityscape. This area is undergoing urban renewal and transformation into an exciting and dynamic district offering a variety of community, commercial, entertainment and lifestyle attractions. In such a stimulating context, our intention was to design a recognisable landmark that would add value to the urban context, thus becoming a strong icon as part of Singapore’s gateway towards CBD Central Area.

Our design intends to articulate the often-repeated rectilinear residential tower model in the city skyline. It celebrates the flow of the floor lines – smooth, graceful flowing lines – in a natural, continual and fluid manner drawing upon the “Motion in Nature”.

The development consists of two interconnected residential towers sharing a single core and sit on a 5-Storey podium for commercial and retail space which defines a strong urban edge. Our approach to the high rise building massing addresses and reinforces the city junction between Beach Road and Jalan Sultan by adopting an L-shaped towers configuration. The orientation of the towers provides excellent distant views to the Kallang Basin, City Centre and Heritage District nearby and offers a strong urban presence along Beach Road streetscape. Two lushly landscaped communal floors and 16 sky terraces punctuate the 25-Storey towers massing. The sky terraces alternate between the towers, offering the residents fantastic views of the city skyline.

Design approach
In the podium’s form as well as the tower’s profile, our design is dynamic, fluid and muscular. The building footprint and form are meticulously crafted with a perforated metal skin wrapping the podium in a smooth and continual movement, avoiding acute angles. Of the same approach, the transparent glass facade envelopes the towers creating an impressive urban profile and is dramatically distinct from the rest of Beach Road skyline.

Facade and Materials
To strengthen our design statement, the podium is dressed in a sleek perforated metal skin with wave-like lines. This wave-like facade incorporate functional requirements of facade opening for the retail units.
The pattern of the perforated metal skin reinforces the wave lines by alternating the porosity of perforations. The compression and expansion effect of the perforations exhibit the motion of Champagne “bubbles”.
Selection of blue tinted glass offers playful reflections of the sky onto the curvilinear facade of the two towers. The transparent facade offers breath-taking panoramic views of the city and is designed to minimize glare from reflection. In addition, the lines of thin concrete canopies at every floor curve elegantly outwards and towards the edge of the towers providing sun-shading to the apartments where it is needed.
